A report published by the Environmental Working Group claims that 1 in 12 beauty products marketed to African-American women contain ingredients that pose a serious risk to health, according to a report published by CNN.
The non-profit research organization analysed some 1,177 cosmetic products targeted at black women and found that less than a quarter scored ‘low’ on its hazard scale, compared to some 40 percent of products overall.
The worst offenders were hair relaxers, colors and bleaching products, according to the report. “If a black woman is choosing products marketed to their demographic, they have fewer healthier options,” said Nneka Leiba, Deputy Dircetor of Research at the Environmental Working Group.
The group’s findings have been added to the Skin Deep database, enabling consumers to access information on the products they are using.
