Amazon offers shoppers US$10 for unlimited data collection

Amazon is offering shoppers a US$10 voucher in exchange for unlimited data collection, tracking web activity and shopping habits via its Amazon Assistant app, according to The Drum.

“This data is tremendously valuable to Amazon and offering users a mere US$10 for unlimited data collection is analogous to the Dutch buying Manhattan island for US$24 in 1626 – they’re banking on the fact that users have no idea how valuable their data is and the fact that they won’t properly understand this transaction,” Jeremy Tillman, President of Ghostery told The Drum.

Indeed, analysts are questioning Amazon’s intentions as the Amazon Assistant web browser extension requires users to sign away access to their data, which the US e-commerce behemoth reserves the right to use for ‘general marketing, products and services unrelated to the shopping assistant’.

“Customer trust is paramount… and we take customer privacy very seriously,” an Amazon spokesperson told The Drum.
