THE WHAT? Amazon is to locate its South African headquarters in the new R4 billion Cape Town development, named River Club.
THE DETAILS A mixed-use development, the e-tail giant is said to be the anchor tenant, according to the City of Cape Town, with the River Club built on a 15-hectare parcel of land.
Divided into commercial and housing uses across two precincts, the development aims to create up to 19,000 direct and induced jobs.
Amazon will locate its headquarters in the second precinct, which includes around 70,000 square metres of floor space.
THE WHY? River Club is set to bolster the Cape Town economy, and is said to offer economic, social and environmental benefits, with Amazon’s presence a coup for the new development.
Cape Town Executive Mayor Dan Plato stating, “We are committed to driving investment to revitalise the economy, which is slowly recovering following the impact of Covid-19.”
