California bans ‘toxic chemicals’ in cosmetics

THE WHAT? The state of California has aligned its cosmetics regulation more closely with the European Union’s safety laws, after passing the Toxic Free Cosmetics Act, according to a report published by AP News.

THE DETAILS The legislation bans some 24 chemicals known to cause cancer, reproductive harm and hormone disruption from being used in cosmetics.

“Children, communities of color and pregnant women are especially vulnerable to these ingredients, which are not actively regulated by the federal government,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom, per AP News.

THE WHY? The law is designed to protect professional salon workers, who are disproportionately exposed to toxic chemicals in cosmetics as well as society’s most vulnerable.
