THE WHAT? Avon has become the latest cosmetics firm to face a jury trial over the presence of asbestos in its talc-based products. The direct sales firm was ordered to pay US$10.3 million in punitive damages to a plaintiff who developed cancer after using talc-based powders sold by the beauty brand, according to a report published by Bloomberg.
THE DETAILS The latest sum was awarded in addition to the US$40 million in actual damages awarded by the Los Angeles Superior Court jury.
THE WHY? Avon told Bloomberg in an emailed statement, “We are disappointed by this verdict and will vigorously pursue all available avenues to appeal. Avon is confident that it has strong grounds for appeal and will continue to defend its position.”
