Clorox has become the latest FMCG giant to issue a promise to use only responsibly sourced palm oil in its supply chain by 2020.
The pledge marks a significant departure for the maker of Burt’s Bees, who has thus far resisted the urge to play catch up with its competitors on the environmental front, scoring zero out of a possible 100 points when the Union of Concerned Scientists rated companies on their palm oil sourcing standards earlier this year.
“This is a win for forests,” commented UCS Analyst, Lael Goodman. “Clorox’s competitors, including Procter & Gamble and Colgate Palmolive have already issued deforestation-free palm oil commitments, so it’s good to see Clorox follow their lead, especially since they market some of their products as green.”
