Code red: 100 beauty brands advocate for change with climate-focused social media blackout

THE WHAT? More than 100 beauty and wellness brands, including Versed, Youth to the People, Milk Makeup and Kjaer Weis, participated in a social media blackout on Zero Emissions Day last week in a bid to advocate for solutions to the growing climate crisis.

THE DETAILS The CodeRed4Climate, as the initiative was dubbed, saw several brands shut down their e-commerce operations for a day to boot.

The marketing black out was accompanied by an open letter to Congress, signed by participating brands, emphasizing their support for lawmaker action on climate.

THE WHY? Melanie Bender, Founding President of Versed and leader of CodeRed4Climate, explains, “It’s not enough to care. Humankind must act—and to avoid disastrous consequences for generations to come, we must act together. Beauty is an industry of trend-makers. We want to use that influence to kickstart a movement of climate responsibility and action—before it’s too late.”
