Court orders Emamai to give Hindustan Unilever seven-day relief over ‘Glow & Handsome’ trademark

Court orders Emamai to give Hindustan Unilever seven-day relief over ‘Glow & Handsome’ trademark

THE WHAT? An Indian court has ruled that consumer goods maker Emami must give Hindustan Unilever seven days before it begins legal proceedings regarding the ‘Glow & Handsome’ trademark.

THE DETAILS Emami has claimed that it put ‘Glow & Handsome’ to market a week before HUL launched the rebrand of its skin lightening cream for men.

HUL originally applied for the Glow & Lovely and the Glow & Handsome trademarks in 2018, which were rejected in 2019. However, the company appealed in a petition to the high court in June this year.

Neither parties responded to Reuter’s request for comment.

THE WHY?  The development of the skin lightening creams rebrand follows a backlash over the connotations of its former Fairy & Lovely name in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.
