CVS Health announces bonus for employees and plans to hire 50,000 staff

THE WHAT? CVS Health has announced that it is awarding bonuses to employees required to be at facilities to assist patients and customers in recognition of their essential role amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

THE DETAILS Bonuses will range between US$150 and US$500 and be awarded to pharmacists and certain other health care professionals on the frontlines, store associates and managers, and other site-based hourly employees.

Employees will also benefit from provisions such as day care entitlement for their dependents, and 24 hours paid sick leave for part-time employees (full time employees already had access to paid sick leave) in addition to the 14-day paid leave for those employees who test positive for COVID-19 or need to be quarantined following exposure.

“Our colleagues have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to providing essential goods and services at a time when they’re needed most,” said Larry J. Merlo, President and CEO, CVS Health. “As they continue to be there for the individuals and families we serve, we’re taking extra steps to provide some peace of mind and help them navigate these uncertain times.”

What’s more the drugstore chain has announced its most ambitious hiring drive to date, with plans to immediately fill 50,000 full-, part-time and temporary roles country-wide. The company will use digital tools such as virtual job fairs, interviews and try-outs to recruit staff.

THE WHY? An influx of talent will help manage capacity for existing employees, while the bonus and additional benefits will help employees overcome the challenges caused by school closures.
