European Commission approves lash dyes for professional use

The European Commission has adopted an SCCS opinion stating that a number of oxidative hair dye substances used for the purposes of coloring lashes are safe to use by professionals.

Toluene-2,5-Diamine, p-Aminophenol, 2-Methylresorcinol, Tetraaminopyrimidine Sulfate, Hydroxyethyl-p-Phenylenediamine Sulfate and 2-Amino-3-Hydroxypyridine have all been approved under an amendment to Annex III to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 – although they do pose a risk if used in-expertly and therefore must carry a warning label and should only be used by professionals.

The amendments to Annex III were enacted in February, and came into force at the end of March.
