Facebook launches WhatsApp Pay in Brazil

THE WHAT? Facebook is launching a new function for its popular messaging platform. WhatsApp Pay will allow users in Brazil to make digital payments without leaving the social platform, according to a report published by the Financial Times.  

THE DETAILS The app’s 120 million users in Brazil will be able to send money to each other or make purchases for free directly via the platform – more key than ever before thanks to COVID-19 social distancing measures.

The roll out is part of Facebook’s wider strategy to prioritise the launch of this feature in Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and India. “Making payments simple can help bring more businesses into the digital economy, opening up new opportunities for growth,” WhatsApp said in a statement, per the Financial Times.

THE WHY? Facebook is keen to encourage and enable more shopping via its platforms both in a bid to compete with e-commerce giants such as Amazon and also to gather more data, the Financial Times said.
