French government relaxes curb on opening hours for Parisian retailers following illegal late-night Sephora shopping sprees

The French government has relaxed its strict ban on Sunday and late-night opening for retailers to provide a much-needed boost to employment and trade.

From next month, retailers in 12 designated ‘zones touristiques internationales’ (international tourist zones) will be permitted to open on Sunday as well as stay open until midnight during the working week.

The move will no doubt be welcomed by perfumery chain Sephora, who flouted the ban on late-night opening two-years ago, a move supported by their staff who welcomed the extra hours.

The French ban is a measure designed to preserve workers’ rights to a family life, as well as to protect independent traders who do not have the resources to open 24/7.
