Germany revisits plans to legalize cannabis

THE WHAT? Germany has revisited its proposal to legalize cannabis in the wake of feedback from the European Commission, according to a report published by Reuters. The amended legislation, if passed, would greenlight the private cultivation and distribution of the drug via non-profits but stop short of granting blanket permission to sell.

THE DETAILS The provision also allows for a pilot of a limited number of licensed shops to test the effect of a commercial supply of recreational pot on various parameters such as public health and the black market.

THE WHY? Health Minister Karl Lauterbach explains, per Reuters, “The previous cannabis policy has failed. Now we have to go new ways.”
