Ginkgo Bioworks raises US$350 million for ‘Ferment Fund’

Ginkgo Bioworks has raised US$350 million, which it intends to use to invest in spinout ventures, according to a report published by Reuters.

The Ferment Fund, as the pot has been named, will invest in two to three companies per year, Jason Kelly, CEO and Co-founder, told Reuters in an interview. General Atlantic, Viking Global Investors and Cascade participated in the funding.

Ginkgo announced a Series E financing round of US$290 million as recently as September, according to a press release issued by the company, aimed at further expanding its platform for cell programming.
