Hemp Industries Association calls for FDA to regulate hemp extracts as cosmetics

The Hemp Industries Association is imploring the FDA to treat hemp extracts under the same regulatory framework that it applies to cosmetics, dietary supplements, food and food additives, according to a report published by Hemp Today.

The industry body submitted its recommendation to the US Food and Drugs Association that existing legislation be merely expanded in remit to cover CBD, cannabinoids and hemp extracts. It also called for a ban on synthetic CBD.

The FDA requested feedback from stakeholders regarding the regulation of cannabis extracts with a view to developing guidance on the sale and consumption of this booming category, and received some 4,000 responses, including manufacturers, state and local health departments and trade bodies such as HIA and the US Hemp Roundtable.
