The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors (ICMAD) association and Professional Beauty Association (PBA) have announced their joint support for The Safe Cosmetics Modernization Act, a bill which was reintroduced by Congressman Pete Sessions in January.
“Safety is an essential component to all our members’ businesses and a top priority at ICMAD. This legislation promotes safety and a modern approach to regulation that won’t stifle our members’ ability to compete, innovate and grow,” said Pam Busiek, President and CEO of ICMAD. “We are proud to support H.R. 575 alongside the Professional Beauty Association.”
The announcement was released on the same day that Senators Feinstein and Collins proposed granting the FDA the authority to regulate the safety of personal care products under the Personal Care Products Safety Act, according to a report published by The Cut. The Safe Cosmetics Modernization Act only requires manufacturers to be registered with the FDA, and track adverse reaction reports.
“From shampoo to lotion, everyone — women, men, children — uses personal-care products every day,” Feinstein told The Cut. “Despite the universal use of these products, none of their ingredients have been independently evaluated for safety. This puts consumers’ heath at risk and we urgently need to update the nearly 80-year-old safety rules.”
