THE WHAT? Instagram has begun allowing public posts from professional accounts to appear in Google and other search engine results.
THE DETAILS The update applies to business and creator accounts held by users over the age of 18. Photos, videos, carousels, and Reels from these accounts are now eligible for indexing. The feature is enabled by default but can be turned off manually in privacy settings. Personal and private accounts remain unaffected.
Indexing is managed through Instagram’s privacy controls, not changes to Google’s crawling technology. Captions and alt text are now treated as searchable content.
THE WHY? The move changes how Instagram content is discovered, expanding its visibility beyond the app and into search engines. This shift may affect content strategies for professional users as posts can now appear alongside traditional web content in organic search results.
