THE WHAT? Palm oil supplier IOI has issued a statement in response to allegations concerning forced labor at its Malaysian branch. The commodity producer revealed that it was aware of a letter from US Customs and Border Protection which acknowledges receipt of a petition containing said allegations and that it has determined that there is sufficient cause to investigate.
THE DETAILS However, IOI said that it has not been contacted by CBP but would nevertheless take a proactive step in contacting the US agency to confirm whether the investigation had been opened and offer to cooperate with the same.
THE WHY? As a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, and among the first Malaysian companies to announce a zero recruitment fees policy, IOI said that it was well aware of the importance of its workers rights and working conditions, as well as the requirement to adhere to Malaysian labor laws and international labor standards.
