THE WHAT? Unilever-owned Dove has partnered with Lizzo, Shonda Rhimes, Megan Crabbe and Nyome Nicholar-Williams for the latest incantation of its #DoveSelfEsteemProject, which aims to make social media a more body positive space for the next generation, according to a report published by Us.
THE DETAILS The singer shared an unedited nude photo on her Instagram grid to counter a recent study that showed that, by the age of 13, 80 percent of girls edit their selfies before sharing them.
Dove is imploring parents and carers to have ‘the selfie talk’ with the young people in their lives, and encourage them to share filter-free shots and normalise real beauty.
THE WHY? Lizzo explained in a press release, per Us, “People are struggling with their self-image and self-confidence more than ever. This is amplified by the increasing pressure to show a digitally distorted version of ourselves, reinforcing the idea that our beauty in real life is not good enough or worthy of likes.”
