L’Oréal sued over hair straightening-products cancer claims

THE WHAT? L’Oréal is being sued by a Missouri plaintiff who claims she has developed uterine cancer as a result of using hair straightening products by the French beauty giant, according to a report by Reuters.

THE DETAILS The lawsuit has been filed in a federal court in Chicago, with plaintiff Jennifer Mitchell stating she was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2018 following her usage of L’Oréal products since 2010.

Mitchell has requested that L’Oréal pays out unspecified damages as well as medical monitoring.

The plaintiff’s lawyer stated that there would likely be more lawsuits in the future, as “many women will be coming forward in the coming weeks and months to seek accountability.”

THE WHY? The lawsuit comes just days after the release of a study by the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS), which found that hair-straightening products and chemical hair straighteners may significantly increase the risk of uterine cancer among frequent users.
