Lush partnered with Ocean Legacy Foundation to gather 27 tons of plastic from Vancouver Island, which the ethical cosmetics firm is planning to use to make the packaging for its products, according to a report published by Bustle. The effort was funded through sales of the brand’s Charity Pot body lotion.
The haul will be transformed into plastic pellets by Urban Resource Group, and combined with other post-consumer waste before being transformed into recycled packaging for Lush’s popular products.
Lush revealed that some 8 million tons of plastic are dumped in the ocean every year, leading to an estimated 5 trillion pieces of plastic left floating on the world’s oceans.
