Luxury celebrates as Coty looks set for success in Amazon battle

Coty is one-step closer to winning a court case that it has fought for nearly 10 years to prevent retailers selling its luxury goods via a third-party online marketplace, according to a report published by Reuters.

Coty challenged German retailer Parfumerie Akzente’s right to sell its products on Amazon and similar auction sites.

“A supplier of luxury goods may prohibit its authorized retailers from selling its products on third-party platforms such as Amazon or eBay,” read a non-binding opinion delivered by Advocate General Nils Wahl at the European Court of Justice.

Advisors’ opinions are followed in four out of five cases, says Reuters – with the final judgement expected from the court before the end of the year.
