MAC issues apology for missing Taiwan off the map in marketing email

Lauder-owned MAC Cosmetics has apologized for disseminating a map of China that did not include the island of Taiwan in a mailer, according to a report published by the Global Times.

“MAC always respects and supports the one-China policy,” the company said in a statement posted on its Sina Weibo account, per Global Times.

However, several Chinese shoppers failed to be mollified by the apology with one user posting ‘I’m Chinese first, then a consumer, only if you respect the market can the market feed you back’.

MAC is the latest of several companies to have been criticised for their treatment of the increasingly powerful Chinese consumer, with both Gap and Dolce & Gabbana also coming under fire for ‘insensitive’ products and campaigns.
