THE WHAT? The FDA for Maharashtra state has barred Johnson & Johnson from selling its branded talcum powder in the region, ordering it to recall its stock with immediate effect due to safety concerns, according to a report published by the Times of India.
THE DETAILS The regulatory body made the decision following tests conducted on samples in 2019, which found the pH level to be outside of the permitted range. The US manufacturer subsequently lost a court challenge to the findings.
THE WHY? While Johnson & Johnson has staunchly defended the safety of its baby powder in multiple courtrooms, it announced earlier this year that its talc-based baby powder would be phased out and replaced with corn starch globally in 2023.
