THE WHAT? A campaign started by Instagram user @browngirlhands is challenging beauty brands to usher in diversity in all of their marketing, including hand shots, according to a report published by Dazed Digital.
THE DETAILS College student Hannah was inspired to open the account after reading a piece written by Jessica DeFino analysing the Instagram accounts of top nail brands such as Essie and Coty-owned OPI to discover how often brown hands featured. The answer? Rarely.
@browngirlhands is designed to redress the balance via images of Hannah’s own hands holding cult beauty products.
“Representation in all facets of beauty is so important,” Hannah told Dazed. “The imagery and people brands and the media choose to portray have the power to impact standards of beauty, self-confidence, careers, as well as product development. It’s important for women to see themselves, to feel valued, beautiful, and seen, because isn’t the point of beauty?”
THE WHY? Hannah told Dazed Beauty that she hopes the account will inspire beauty brands to engage with images of black models.
