SC Johnson has published its ingredient selection criteria within its 26th annual sustainability report, The Science Inside. The Greenlist program, as the initiative is known, is designed to help the company select ingredients that better protect human health and the environment.
“We know consumers today are more interested than ever in the products they bring into their homes,” said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson. “What matters most is the trust consumers place in our company and that they count on our products to be effective and safe. We believe it’s our responsibility to give people the facts so they can make informed choices, and we hope other companies will join us.”
The Greenlist program, which has been in place for two decades, is a peer-reviewed, four-step evaluation of the potential impact on human health and the environment, and is carried out for every ingredient used in every SC Johnson product.
The company also maintains a list of banned ingredients, which it terms the ‘Not Allowable’ list. This directory spans some 200 raw materials and more than 2,400 fragrance materials that do not conform to the company’s standards, despite being passed from a regulatory standpoint.
SC Johnson also announced that it has now reached zero waste to landfill at more than 65 percent of its manufacturing sites, ahead of target.
