THE WHAT? L’Oréal has followed in the footsteps of the likes of Johnson & Johnson and Unilever, pledging to address the troubling connotations of products that purport to lighten or whiten skin, according to a report published by Reuters.
THE DETAILS Like Unilever, L’Oréal has pledged to remove terms such as ‘white’, ‘fair’ and ‘light’ from products designed to even out skin tone but has not announced plans to discontinue such products.
THE WHY? The #BlackLivesMatter movement has highlighted several instances of systemic racism, and the inference that lighter skin tones are more desirable than darker shades is a perfect example. Is a change in the language enough?
