THE WHAT? Last week Pantone announced that it had partnered with menstrual cup brand Intimina to create a shade dubbed ‘period’ in a bid to normalise menstruation. However, the move appears to have backfired as several social media commentators took to the platform to query the shade chosen.
THE DETAILS The lipstick-red hue in no way resembles blood, many noted, including Refinery 29. “This is not the colour of any menstrual blood (or non-menstrual blood) I’ve ever seen. This is the sugary red of canned cherry pie filling and race cars,” journalist Michelle Santiago Cortes, writing for the digital publication noted.
THE WHY? While we’re sure both Pantone and Intimina’s intentions were good, women have endured decades of sanitary protection advertising that employs a mysterious blue liquid, so the last thing that we need is anyone else glossing over the realities of menstruation.
