THE WHAT? Pantone has revealed its 2021 color of the year as two standalone hues, 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating, in a bid to convey ‘strength and positivity.’
THE DETAILS The Color Institute opted for two hues for the coming year, with Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute telling Vogue that the decision was based on the “psychology of colour and how it plays into how people feel in general.”
This is the second time Pantone has chosen two colors, with the institute selecting two hues in 2016.
Talking about the color choice, Laurie Pressman, Vice Oresident of the Pantone Color Institute, told Vogue, “The one thing that became abundantly clear to us was the deepening understanding across the generations of how much we need each other, and that it’s our connection to other people that gives us the fortitude and hope, which are essential for us to move forward.”
THE WHY? With 2020 being a difficult and dark year for many, the decision to create an inspiring color duo was said to be ‘aspirational and gives us hope.’
According to a press release, “As people look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality. PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power. PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation.”
