Play on? Glossier rethinks diffusion line

THE WHAT? Glossier has announced wide-ranging sustainability measures that will include the discontinuation of its Glitter Gelee product under its Play line, effective March 2.

THE DETAILS Founder Emily Weiss posted a statement on the Glossier Company Blog explaining the decision.

“We’re discontinuing one of our products: Glitter Gelee. We launched Glitter Gelee last March, and quickly heard from many of you who were disappointed that we’d created a product using glitter, which has become increasingly and deservedly controversial since it gets into the waterways and accumulates in the ocean. It was clear to us that we’d made the wrong choice, so we pledged to work on reformulating this product with bio-glitter, a newer and more environmentally-friendly raw material.”

A report published by Business of Fashion suggest the company is rethinking its entire Play line and will not be launching any further products under the Play banner.

THE WHY? Founded on the basis of creating hero products for its engaged community of beauty enthusiasts, Glossier has always been a responsive brand and its Play line has failed to deliver on the sales front and its ethics questioned.
