Procter & Gamble issues voluntary recall of Old Spice and Secret products following carcinogen found

THE WHAT? Procter & Gamble (P&G) has issued a voluntary recall of specific Old Spice and Secret aerosol spray antiperspirants and Old Spice Below Deck aerosol spray products after the carcinogen benzene was detected.

THE DETAILS The personal care giant has recalled aerosols that expire through to September 2023.

The recall follows a review from independent laboratory Valisure, which detected benzene in the products earlier this month. The lab tested 108 batches of antiperspirant and deodorant sprays, detecting benzene in 59 batches.

Valisure then petitioned the FDA to request a recall.

According to the FSA, “The Procter & Gamble Company has notified its retailers to remove products from shelves. Old Spice and Secret will also offer reimbursement for consumers who have purchased products impacted by this recall. Consumers should stop using and appropriately discard the affected aerosol spray products.”

THE WHY? P&G spokesperson Kate DiCarlo said in an email, “Our manufacturing partner identified an issue with their propellant supply and is implementing additional measures to address the issue identified in the investigation.”
