THE WHAT? Sally Beauty has become the latest retailer to usher in a ban on plastic bags. The company has launched the wide-ranging SBH Going Green initiative to reduce its environmental impact by reducing waste and energy usage throughout its stores, supply chain and headquarters.
THE DETAILS Starting this year, Sally Beauty, CosmoProf and Armstrong McCall stores will discontinue the use of plastic bags, instead offering shoppers a choice between paper and reusable bags made from recycled materials for a small fee.
This effort alone will eliminate more than 104 million plastic bags from landfill per year. The company will also remove all instances of Styrofoam from its operations and launch a cardboard recycling program for its corporate headquarters.
THE WHY? “Sally Beauty is committed to a top-down transformation. Making our operations more sustainable helps our communities and our business,” said Aaron Alt, president of Sally Beauty Supply. “Our customer base wants to see a more environmentally-friendly Sally, and we’re proud of the plan we’ve developed to get us there.”
