Sephora launches ‘CBD Standards’ in a bid to become a leading retailer in the burgeoning market

THE WHAT? Sephora has launched its CBD Standards, new guidelines that cover potency, ingredient policy and the manufacturing processes.

THE DETAILS CBD products hoping to appear on Sephora’s roster must also first comply to its Clean Beauty Standards, launched in 2018, before adhering to the newly launched standards specific to CBD.

The guidelines require products to contain full or spectrum CBD, the CBD must be grown domestically, and all products must be triple checked by a third party with a certificate of analysis proving the CBD content must be available. This is to ensure that the ingredients match the label, according to Glossy.

THE WHY? With consumer interest in CBD products continuing to grow, it’s a lucrative industry to be in. However, the market has murky guidelines at best when it comes to product regulation.

Cindy Deily, VP of skin care merchandising at Sephora, said, “Search for CBD on Sephora.com has increased over 1000 times since 2018, so there’s clearly client interest in these kind of products. As customers are looking to navigate this growing category, we saw the need to provide transparency and quality assurance.”
