Shopfiy forms strategic partnership with JD.com

THE WHAT? Shopify and Chinese retailer JD.com have entered into a strategic partnership to make it easier for U.S merchants to sell to consumers in China.

THE DETAILS The partnership will allow Shopify to help global brands tap into the booming Chinese market, with Shopify merchants able to sell on JD’s cross-border platform JD Worldwide and acess up to 550 million active customers in China.

Shopify merchants will be able to be present within China within three to four weeks, as opposed to the usual 12 month wait time that is typical for foreign brands.

As part of the deal, merchants will get expedited onboarding, logistical help to handle end-to-end fulfilment, smart price conversion to local currency based on foreign exchange rates and intelligent translation of product names and descriptions.

THE WHY? The deal will allow U.S. merchants quicker and greater access to the lucrative yet complex Chinese market, putting JD.Com and Shopify in competition with the likes of Alibaba, Pinduoduo and Douyin.

Daniel Tan, President of JD Worldwide, said, “JD.com is thrilled to partner with Shopify. We believe that the partnership will unlock the huge potential of the Chinese market for brands outside of China. At the same time, it will increase cross-border commerce by leveraging our global supply chain abilities, simplifying what has traditionally been a very complicated process.”
