THE WHAT? Shopify has accused two employees of stealing data from some 100 merchants or more, including cosmetics brand 100% Pure, according to a report published by BNN Bloomberg.
THE DETAILS Less than 200 sellers were affected by the breach, where ‘rogue’ workers from the platform’s support team facilitated the accessing of customer transaction records, including emails, names and addresses.
As a result, Shopify is cooperating with an FBI-led criminal investigation and has terminated the employees’ access to its systems.
THE WHY? Shopify’s rapid growth has only been boosted by the pandemic as online shopping booms – as we rely more and more on the digital channel, are more data breaches inevitable?
