South Africa is set to become the next country to usher in a ban on animal testing for cosmetics, according to a report published by Business Tech.
The Animals Protection Amendment Bill, which is currently in consultation, seeks to prohibit the sale or manufacture of beauty products that have been developed using animal testing in South Africa, as well as introduce severe penalties for those found to be testing cosmetics on animals.
“Animal testing is quite legal in South Africa, and is conducted at most universities, the Medical Research Council, other research facilities and private laboratories,” Beryl Scott, National Chairwoman of Beauty Without Cruelty South Africa told Business Tech.
