Talc is bowing out: Chanel, Revlon and L’Oréal to discontinue products containing controversial ingredient

THE WHAT? Chanel, L’Oréal and Revlon are phasing out controversial cosmetic ingredient talc in the US, according to a report published by Reuters.

THE DETAILS The powder-like substance has received a lot of bad press in recent years with several lawsuits launched against key purveyors of the associated cosmetic product such as Johnson & Johnson.

Chanel is said to have removed talc from its loose face powder and discontinued a fragranced body powder due to its reputation as a carcinogen, while Revlon has also removed the controversial ingredient from body products and L’Oreal is thought to be investigating alternatives.

THE WHY? With several courts awarding high levels of damages to plaintiffs alleging that its use caused them to develop cancer, companies are distancing themselves from the controversial ingredient.
