THE WHAT? The President of the European Research Council (ERC), Professor Mauro Ferrari has resigned over the bloc’s failure to set up a coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report published by the Financial Times.
THE DETAILS “I have been extremely disappointed by the European response to COVID-19,” Ferrari said in a statement issued to the Financial Times. “I arrived at the ERC a fervent supporter of the EU [but] the COVID-19 crisis completely changed my views, though the ideals of international collaboration, I continue to support with enthusiasm.”
Ferrari claimed that the European Commission had refused to provide ‘resources and opportunities’ to enable the world’s best scientists to fight the pandemic.
THE WHY? The ERC Scientific Council claimed that its remit extended only to ‘bottom up’ research and therefore it could not green light a program which had been frame-worked by the Union.
