The Estee Lauder Companies suspends John Dempsey for posting racial slur

THE WHAT? The Estee Lauder Companies is said to have suspended Executive Group President, John Demsey, without pay after he posted a meme featuring the N-word on his personal Instagram account, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal.

THE DETAILS The post, which has since been deleted, is the latest in a long line of controversial posts from Demsey which have triggered negative reactions on the platform – although it is the first to feature a racist term and prompt a reaction from the US prestige beauty giant.

THE WHY? Chief Executive, Fabrizio Freda and Chairman, William Lauder explained in an internal memo seen by The Wall Street Journal, “Effective immediately, John Demsey is being placed on unpaid leave due to content posted on his Instagram handle. The content posted does not represent the values of The Estee Lauder Companies. As a company deeply committed to inclusive actions and behavior, and in line with out company policies, our employees and our leadership are accountable for upholding these values.”
