THE DETAILS Ferreira toldReuters that the government was enabling deforestation through lax regulation and adversely affecting Brazilian exports.

The right-wing administration has pursued a policy of development for the protected forest, claiming that this will enable economic growth.

THE WHY? Amazon deforestation hit a 12-hour high last year, per Reuters quoting government data. Activists claim that Bolsonaro’s policies have encouraged illegal clearing of the forest. Ferreira told Reuters that preventing unlawful logging was the government’s responsibility and must be ended immediately.
