THE WHAT? Dubai saw trademark applications increase by 34 percent in 2019 compared to the previous year, according to a report published by Gulf Business.
THE DETAILS Some 31 percent of all applications were lodged by US-based brands (1,585 files), while local brands accounted for 16 percent (818 files).
Meanwhile, infringement cases were down 17 percent on 2018’s figures, a sign that the city is winning the battle against counterfeits. Some 35 complaints were lodged by perfume brands while cosmetics companies filed 32 complaints.
THE WHY? As Mohammed Ali Rashed Lootah, CEO of the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection sector at Dubai Economy told Gulf Business, “The rising number of trademarks and agencies registered shows the importance of Dubai Economy not only in attracting the best and highest-quality brands from around the world but also in providing multi-channel intellectual property protection.”
