UK government calls for data on nanomaterials in cosmetics

THE WHAT? The UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards has invited interested parties to submit any scientific information relevant to the safety assessment of nanomaterials used in cosmetics.

THE DETAILS The nanomaterials included in the scope of the call for data include platinum, copper, silver, colloidal silver, gold, colloidal gold, silica and variants of the same, lithium magnesium sodium silicate and hydroxyapatite.

THE WHY? Article 16 of the UK Cosmetics Regulation requires that cosmetics products containing nanomaterials must be notified to the Secretary of State at least six months before being placed on the market.
