Unilever joins consortium to make ventilators for UK hospitals

THE WHAT? Unilever has become part of a consortium from the aerospace, automotive and medical sectors that will come together to create ventilators for UK hospitals.

THE DETAILS The personal care giant will take part in the Ventilator Challenge UK consortium, lending its ‘engineering expertise’ to the collective, which includes Unilever partner McLaren F1, Airbus, Ford Motor Company, Rolls-Royce, GKN, Penlon and Siemens. The company is also bringing in partner Microsoft for IT support.

Leading the initiative, manufacturing Executive Dick Elsy, said: “This consortium brings together some of the most innovative companies in the world. Every day, their highly skilled staff collaborate to create solutions that help millions of people, and this project is no different.”

Receiving formal orders from the government, the consortium will use their combined resources to make ventilators for intensive care units to treat COVID-19 patients.

According to a Unilever press release, “Unilever is supporting the consortium with the co-ordination of the complex multi-tiered supply network and providing visibility of overall supply chain health and key risks. We’re able to do so by applying our digital tech to analyse key data metrics.”

The company will also be supplying hand sanitizer and cleaning products to production sites.

THE WHY? The coronavirus pandemic has seen businesses from across countless industries lending their support and proficiencies in a bid to help tackle and stem the spread of the virus.

Speaking about the consortium, Elsy continued, “They are working together with incredible determination and energy to scale up production of much-needed ventilators and combat a virus that is affecting people in many countries. I am confident this consortium has the skills and tools to make a difference and save lives.”
