THE WHAT? Unilever has announced that it is set to launch a pilot with Orbital Insight, a US tech company that specialises in geospatial analytics, to help monitor its palm oil supply.
THE DETAILS The pilot will use geolocation data to help identify the farms and plantations supplying the palm oil mills in Unilever’s extended supply chain by leveraging GPS data, aggregated and anonymised to allow Orbital Insight to spot traffic patterns.
“Better monitoring helps all of us to understand what’s happening within our supply chains,” says Marc Engel, Chief Supply Chain Officer. “By companies coming together and using cutting-edge technology to carefully monitor our forests, we can all get closer to achieving our collective goal of ending deforestation.”
THE WHY? By identifying consistent flows of traffic between land and mill, the Anglo-Dutch FMCG manufacturer will be able to form a clearer picture of where harvested crops are coming from, in turn allowing it to predict and act against issues such as deforestation.
