THE WHAT? Hindustan Unilever, the Indian subsidiary of Unilever, has flagged a short-term hit to sales following the government’s recent goods and services tax (GST) cuts on consumer products.
THE DETAILS The tax reductions, which span categories from soaps to small cars, were introduced earlier this month to stimulate domestic demand amid global economic headwinds, including U.S. tariffs. However, Hindustan Unilever noted that the move triggered short-term market disruption as distributors and retailers cleared inventory at pre-cut prices.
The company expects consolidated business growth for the quarter ending September 30 to be nearly flat or in the low single digits, with the effect extending into October. Stabilisation of sales and pricing is anticipated from November as inventories normalize under the revised tax regime.
THE WHY? While GST cuts are intended to boost consumption over the longer term, the transitional period has created supply chain and pricing challenges that are dampening near-term performance for one of India’s leading fast-moving consumer goods companies.
