US grocery chain Wegmans is set to remove a wide range of cosmetic products containing microbeads from its shelves in February.

The ban is in line with new legislation due to come into effect in Erie County, NY, which will prevent the sale of any cosmetics containing polyethylene microbead plastics across the region. The retailer has decided to apply the legislation to its entire retail network, including stores outside Erie County.

“We feel it is the right thing to do for the communities we serve, and it falls under our sustainability initiative to make responsible decisions for people, business and environment,” said Mary Ellen Burris, Senior Vice President Consumer Affairs at Wegmans in a statement published on the store’s website.

Johnson & Johnson’s RoC, Aveeno and Clean & Clear brands, P&G’s Olay and Crest toothpaste, and L’Oréal’s Garnier will all be affected by the ban – a full list of products that will no longer be on sale is available on the retailer’s website, together with proposed dates for reformulation.
