Walmart plans 150 new stores for US

THE WHAT? In a U-turn from its prior strategy to maintain its current store count, while boosting its online presence, Walmart has unveiled a plan to open 150 new stores by 2030 and remodel 650 locations over the course of 2024.

THE DETAILS According to a report published by the Wall Street Journal, quoting an internal staff memo, the US retail behemoth is set to cut the ribbon on 12 new stores this year and will kick off a program to convert smaller stores into supercenters.

THE WHY? The Wall Street Journal reports that Walmart is increasingly using stores as fulfilment centers and an increased store footprint chimes with wider retail trends. In the US, store openings outpaced closures in 2023 for the second year in a row.
