Walmart to Trump: We’ll raise prices if you go ahead with Chinese tariffs

Walmart has written a letter to US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer flagging the possibility that it will be forced to up prices should the Trump administration proceed with a tariff on Chinese imports, according to a report published by Reuters.

The largest retailer in the world reiterated that the tariff would affect prices across the board, including food, drinks and personal care. The US has imposed duties on US$200 billion-worth of goods so far, prompting China to brand the nation a bully and usher in retaliatory charges on US$60 billion of US products. However, the Chinese government has said that it is willing to return to talks if the US is prepared to treat the Asian nation as an ‘equal’.

When contacted by Reuters, Walmart confirmed the content of the letter and issued a statement to the media outlet urging the two nations to resolve the current dispute.
