Keeping it local: Unilever Ghana to source packaging from domestic market

Unilever Ghana is hoping to up the percentage of packaging materials it sources from its home market, according to a report published by JoyBusiness.

The Dutch FMCG manufacturer’s Ghanaian division currently sources some 80 percent of packaging material locally and is working to increase this to 99 percent.

“One of the challenges that we have always had has been around capacity and capability and instead of sitting and watching we have taken the lead on that particular front,” Ziobeieton Yeo, Managing Director Unilever Ghana, told JoyBusiness. “There’s no reason why we should continue to import what we can contribute to producing locally here so last year I briefed the team to try and localize as much as possible; we moved from a barely 20 percent local sourcing to today aiming for 99 percent – so what you see in the market, be it Lifebuoy, be it Geisha, is all sourced in Ghana; we contribute to creating jobs.”
