THE WHAT? L’Oréal has entered a multi-year partnership with clean chemicals company Dioxycle to develop sustainable packaging materials made from captured carbon emissions.
THE DETAILS Dioxycle’s technology uses carbon electrolysis to convert captured CO and CO₂ emissions into sustainable ethylene, a key component used to produce polyethylene, one of the most widely used plastics in packaging. The approach creates a renewable carbon source for packaging materials while maintaining virgin-quality performance.
The technology is designed as a “drop-in” solution that can integrate with existing manufacturing processes and complement other sustainability approaches such as recycling and bio-based materials. Under the partnership, L’Oréal plans to incorporate polyethylene produced through this process into its packaging portfolio as part of its broader sustainability efforts.
THE WHY? The collaboration aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging by replacing fossil-fuel-based materials with carbon-derived alternatives, helping address Scope 3 emissions, which represent the largest share of emissions in many companies’ value chains.
